In a daylight robbery on Monday, six miscreants looted Rs 13.74 lakh after killing the security guard of a Corporation Bank branch in Sadar Bazaar police station area in Saharanpur, which is barely a few metres away from the DIG Saharanpur range office.
The Station Officer (SO) of Sadar Bazaar police station, the in-charge of Civil Lines police outpost and two constables who were on patrol duty in the area were suspended for dereliction of duty.
According to police, the bike-borne assailants reached the bank at around 12.30 pm. While two stayed outside, the rest entered the branch and fired in the air, warning those inside not to move. They immediately collected Rs 4.76 lakh from the cash counter, and also snatched Rs 9 lakh from the possession of a businessman from Hakiqat Nagar.
On hearing the gunshots, the guard – Ramesh Chandra Baloti – ran inside the bank hearing the gunshots, said SSP Saharanpur Manoj Tiwari. He shot at one of the robbers, who suffered a bullet injury in his hand, while another robber shot Baloti in his stomach. Soon after, the robbers collected the cash and escaped, added Tiwari.
“The guard was later rushed to the hospital, but he died on the way. As we were going through the CCTV footage, we found that the heist took place in just four minutes and 32 seconds,” Tiwari said.
The SSP added that the robbers also took away the CCTV recorder with them. “The bank staff told us that a customer had recently demanded CCTV footage for which they had to take the recorder out. It was lying outside since then,” Tiwari said.
Police have requested all doctors in the city to inform them if anyone with a bullet injury in his hand approaches them for treatment.
