Fatehpur: 27 held day after clashes

Heavy police force, including PAC personnel, has been deployed in Jahanabad. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said stern action will be taken if there is any laxity in handling the situation.

A DAY after members of two communities clashed during two separate processions being taken out on Makar Sankranti at Jahanabad town in UP’s Fatehpur district, 27 people were arrested in connection with the violence. They were produced before the court on Friday, which sent them to judicial custody.

Heavy police force, including PAC personnel, has been deployed in Jahanabad. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said stern action will be taken if there is any laxity in handling the situation.

“Those arrested belong to both the communities. They have been accused of indulging in arson and preventing the police from performing its duty. Police have identified 40 people involved in rioting and arson… Efforts are on to arrest other accused as well,” Fatehpur SP Rajeev Malhotra said.

“The accused were identified on the basis of evidence and video footages of the incident. Four locals, whose properties were damaged in the clash, lodged complaints,” he added.

IG (Allahabad Zone) Brij Bhushan said no untoward incident had occurred since Thursday evening. “Most shops in the town were open today… No probe has been ordered into the incident, as prima facie, laxity has not been found on part of the police,” he added.

Senior officials on Friday held a peace meeting comprising members from both the communities, the IG said.
