Facing heat, Jharkhand BJP chief Tala Marandi offers to quit

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, who had rushed to Delhi Tuesday, returned to Ranchi and met BJP in-charge of Jharkhand Trivendra Singh Rawat.

Ganesh Mishra, one of the newly appointed office-bearers and a frontrunner to the party chief post, urged the party’s Janata Yuva Morcha members to call off their agitation. “We were concerned about the health of the young boys,” said Mishra.

One of the agitators, Amit Singh, said: “Our job is done. Now, it is up to the central leadership.”

Party sources here claimed that with Marandi offering resignation, the committee announced by him ceased to exist. However, with Marandi’s resignation not yet formally accepted, the fate of the committee remained unclear.

Appointed on March 17, much to the surprise of the state unit, Marandi’s tenure remained embroiled in controversies.

While the controversies so far were related to his personal life — his son being accused of sexually abusing a minor girl and later marrying another minor girl — it was the announcement of the committee on Sunday night through WhatsApp group that led to angry protests.

“The only meeting of note he could hold was the two-day state executive in Dumka… Otherwise, we don’t remember him holding any serious meeting regarding the organisation,” said a BJP leader.

Marandi was elevated to the position of state chief as the party wanted to strengthen its position in Santhal Pargana region where he is the only Hindu tribal face.
