Eighty nine DMK MLAs have been suspended from the Tamil Nadu Assembly for a week by Speaker P Dhanapal on Wednesday leading to dramatic scenes of opposition leader M K Stalin being forcibly carried out by marshals.

The action followed heated arguments between DMK and AIADMK MLAs in the House after one of the AIADMK MLAs criticised Stalin’s nine-month long ‘Namukku Naame,’ a statewide road trip he organised ahead of last Assembly election.

AIADMK MLA Gunasekaran’s critical remarks on Stalin soon invited protests from the DMK and Stalin himself demanded that the Speaker expunge the unwarranted remarks from Assembly records. As the Speaker refused to oblige, DMK MLAs intensified their protest. Meanwhile, the state Finance Minister O Panneerselvam moved a motion in to suspend all DMK MLAs.

The Assembly had witnessed dramatic events on Tuesday too. DMK MLAs protested against the Speaker’s decision to expunge a comment made by Stalin while responding to a comment by handlooms and textiles minister O S Manian.

When the decision had invited strong protests and shoutings from DMK MLAs, speaker had turned off their microphones. However, Stalin told the Speaker that they were not acting against his authority or questioning his ruling.

Despite DMK MLA’s complaints on Speaker’s biased rulings, Stalin apologised on Tuesday, an unusual show of etiquette “to maintain the decorum”. “When you fail to arrive at an appropriate decision, my MLAs might express their feelings or they would even utter some unwanted words. I am deeply pained by this, I feel ashamed and I am waiting to apologize to you,” Stalin said.

But the Speaker was not happy with Stalin’s apology. He said Stalin’s apology reveals the fact that he (Stalin) could not handle his own MLAs.
