Daman police has detained three engineering students from Gujarat for allegedly gangraping a dentistry student. Initially, 11 youths had been detained in connection with the crime; eight of them were later allowed to return home.

The 20-year-old victim, student of a medical college in the Union Territory, was allegedly gangraped in Daman and Anand on April 21 and 22. On Monday evening, police apprehended the 11 students of an engineering college in Anand. The youths come from Surat, Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat and police have not revealed their names.

According to sources, the victim befriended the youths on social media. They exchanged pictures and on April 21, the youths reportedly came to Daman to meet her. They allegedly raped her in a moving car that evening and then took her to a rented flat in Anand’s Moti Bazaar area, where she was gangraped again. The youths reportedly dropped the girl in Daman later.

The victim then went to her home in Valsad district and told her parents about the incident. They lodged a police complaint against the engineering students on Monday. After the students were detained, the girl was brought to the police station where she identified three of the 11 youths. Police then allowed the remaining youths to return home after taking their statements. A medical examination of the victim has confirmed that she was raped.

Daman SDPO Ravi Kumar said, “We have registered a complaint of gangrape against the accused. We let some of the youths return on the condition that they will support police in the investigation. Presently, we have not arrested anyone as we are trying to get a clear picture of the case.”
