A MONTH after an elderly couple were attacked at a park in outer Delhi’s Prashant Vihar, resulting in the death of the woman and grievous injuries to her husband, police said the incident was the result of a suicide pact made by the duo. According to police, the couple decided to kill themselves as they were unable to repay a loan of Rs 9 crore.

JCP(northern range) Sanjay Singh told The Indian Express that they have arrested the husband, Kulbushan Rai Bhutani (63), on charges of killing his wife and trying to kill himself.

“Bhutani has confessed his crime. He told investigators that he and his wife decided to commit suicide as he was facing a financial crisis. He had taken a loan of Rs 9 crore from several persons and could not repay it,” said the JCP.

On August 7, Kanchan Bhutani (59) and her husband were found bleeding on a bench in a park in outer Delhi’s Prashant Vihar. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared Kanchan dead and Bhutani critical. The park where they were found is a few metres away from their home in Laxmi Kunj Apartments.

Bhutani owns factories which manufactures industrial wires, besides other ventures, said police. After the incident, police initially suspected the attack could have been motivated by personal rivalry as Bhutani’s phone, wallet and his wife’s jewellery were not stolen.

Police also found that the couple did not go to the park usually but had decided to go for a walk on the day of the incident.

During questioning, Bhutani said he wanted to commit suicide but was worried about his wife. So they decided to commit suicide together.

“On August 7, the couple’s family members had gone for movie. The couple took a knife from the house and came out for a walk. They had juice from a nearby shop. They then sat on the bench and waited for night to set in. Bhutani slit his wife’s throat and stabbed himself multiple times,” added Singh.
