The Doordarshan Bhawan resembled a fortress on Wednesday evening with the unusual presence of armed CRPF commandos guarding the entrance. Inside the studio was Baba Ramdev, waxing eloquent, among other things, about his efforts at promoting the use of swadeshi products. To illustrate his point, Ramdev spoke about how his desi cosmetics, otherwise sold at exorbitant amounts by various brands, are available at a minimal price. The interview is part of the DD’s programming for International Yoga Day on June 21 and will be telecast along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled event in Chandigarh.
Confident of Numbers
Amid rumours that the NDA will not have the numbers required to choose its candidate as the next President of India, BJP leaders exude a quiet confidence. After the April-May Assembly elections, in which the BJP made considerable gains, party leaders claim that the NDA has already gained an edge of 22,078 votes. The party had 4,57,342 of the 10,98,882 vote strength before these elections. With the leadership confident about a win, aspirants have now started lobbying for the top Constitutional position. But the party leadership maintains that there is enough time to zero in on the candidate.
A week after PM Modi expressed his displeasure about the slow pace of development of railway stations, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has got Adviser-Land and Amenities, an Additional Secretary-rank officer in charge of steering the stations development project, transferred. He has been posted to North Central Railway, whose Principal Chief Engineer will take his place in what is being called a result of inordinate sloth in the high-profile work. In any case, the project of station development has been largely taken away from this office, and the responsibility handed over to the newly created Non-Fare Revenue directorate.
