Vinay Sharma, one of the four convicts in the December 16 gangrape case, allegedly tried to commit suicide inside his cell in Tihar Jail Wednesday. Sharma and the other convicts were sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in December 2012.
While Sharma was hospitalised after the incident, his lawyer claimed that the rape convict was being “tortured” by fellow inmates.
The incident took place at 9.30 pm, when a Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel, on duty inside Tihar, spotted Sharma making a noose with his towel and tying it to a rod inside his cell. The policeman stopped Sharm and immediately informed jail authorities, said sources.
“Our staff rushed him to the hospital inside Tihar. He underwent a check-up and was later taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital,” a jail official told The Indian Express. According to sources, Sharma later told jail officials that he had also consumed a poisonous substance.
Doctors from Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Hospital said Sharma’s condition was stable.
“His condition is stable and his blood pressure is normal. We will keep him under observation for 24 hours and discharge him after that,” said A K Mehta, medical superintendent of DDU Hospital.
When asked if Sharma had consumed any poisonous substance, Mehta said he had not shown any symptoms of poisoning, but doctors were still conducting tests.
Sharma’s father rushed to the hospital as soon as he heard about the incident, said the convict’s lawyer A P Singh.
“His father and I reached the hospital, but we were not allowed to meet him. I told the hospital staff that I am his lawyer, but the security staff still didn’t allow us to enter.
The doctors only told us that his condition was stable,” claimed Singh.
“Sharma is unwell due to regular torture by fellow inmates,” said the lawyer.
Sharma and four others were found guilty of raping and torturing a woman in a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16, 2012. She later died in a Singapore hospital.
While prime accused Ram Singh was found dead in his cell inside Tihar Jail in March 2013, Sharma and three other convicts — Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta — were sentenced to death.
The juvenile accused in the case was convicted and sentenced to a maximum of three years in a reform home.
He was released in December last year.
However, the victim’s father told The Indian Express it was a “conspiracy” to delay proceedings into the matter.
“All four convicts should commit suicide inside prison as our system has failed to give us justice. This is just a conspiracy by their lawyers to delay legal proceedings,” he said.
