On the penultimate day of the plenum here, the CPM leadership stressed on the need to improve the quality of the party’s membership by increasing women members and introducing a retirement policy for the aged whole-timers, as well as improving the party’s inner democracy.
“There is a very serious need to improve the quality of party membership. The focus is not just on numbers — we have 10.66 lakh members now — but on improving the quality of the membership — politically and ideologically,” CPM Politburo member Prakash Karat told reporters on Wednesday.

Admitting that the current women membership of 15.5 per cent in the party was “not satisfactory”, Karat said a target has been set to increase the female party membership to 25 per cent in the next three years.
The former general secretary added that talks are on to introduce a retirement policy for veterans soon.
“We are discussing on the aspects of retirement policy for the old and aged whole-timers who are not able to work due to age and ill health… We have also discussed about selection, training and the retirement policy for such members,” Karat said.
