Amid reports of talks of a possible alliance ahead of polls in Uttar Pradesh, Congress is believed to have drop the plan to organise a mega event in Allahabad on the 99th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Congress had earlier planned to launch its poll campaign from the event in state presence of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
During her visits to Allahabad earlier this year in February and March, party president Sonia Gandhi had met local leaders and discussed plans to launch year-long celebrations to mark centenary year of Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary on November 19. These celebrations were to later continue all across the country till November 19, 2017. Party was also considering to bring Priyanka on this platform and turn it into a mega rally.
However, as per fresh intimation to party leaders in Allahabad, Sonia is now expected to visit Allahabad on either November 20 or 21 and host a lunch or a dinner for the staff of Anand Bhawan and senior party leaders. District party president Anil Dwivedi said, “It is true that party president had indicated about a grand show in Allahabad to launch centenary year celebrations but so far there has been no directive. If there was such a big plan then we would have received the guidelines by now.”
Sources informed that party leadership feels that lot of confusion has been created among the cadre following party strategist Prashant Kishor’s meetings with SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav amid talks of forming an alliance. “The one-month long hard work of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as well as senior leaders like Sheila Dikshit and Raj Babbar has been washed out in this confusion. Party is yet to take a call about how to handle November 19 celebrations now,” said a party leader.
