Delhi Police have arrested four persons who were allegedly conspiring to kill jailed underworld don Chhota Rajan in Delhi on the orders of rival and fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s confidant Chhota Shakeel, said sources.

Highly placed sources told The Indian Express the Special Cell arrested the four accused —Roger Robinson, Junaid, Yunus and Manish — four days ago. Robinson is from Rohini, Junaid from Seelampur, Yunus lived in Ghaziabad, and Manish is from Noida, the sources added.

The accused were produced before a city court Thursday. The court granted judicial custody and the four were sent to Tihar jail, said sources. Incidentally, Rajan is lodged in Tihar jail.

Sources said the four were picked up after their interactions with Shakeel surfaced. One of the accused was in regular touch with Shakeel, who also offered him money to procure weapons, the sources added. “The order was to kill Rajan’s driver first and then the jailed don. Rajan’s driver has been coming to Delhi since his boss was sent to Tihar. The plot was to target Rajan either during the time when he would be taken from Tihar to court or while returning to the jail after a hearing,” said a source.

According to the source, the accused were in touch with Shakeel through internet chats and phone. Police intercepted such phone conversations a week ago, said the source. For their plot to eliminate Rajan, the accused had procured arms and ammunition and were in the process of arranging more, the source added.

The Special Cell recovered a 9 mm pistol, at least two dozen live cartridges and Rs 40,000 from one of the accused. The mobile phones of the accused were seized, said sources. Their voice recordings, for which police may seek custody, will be sent to forensic lab for tests, added the sources.

After being on the run for 27 years, Rajan, 55, was arrested in Bali (Indonesia) on a tip-off from Australian Federal Police in October last year and was deported to India. Rajan, once a Dawood confidant, was brought to India on November 6 to face trial in over 70 cases of murder, extortion and drug smuggling. He has been lodged in Tihar jail since November last year.

On May 1, a Tihar jail official had received an SMS on his mobile phone threatening ‘The End’ of Rajan very soon.
