Chhattisgarh Tapes: Poll panel sends Express report to state, wants reply by Jan 7

The Election Commission on Wednesday directed Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary to conduct an inquiry after The Indian Express reported that there were purported conversations between a section of the Chhattisgarh Congress leaders and persons close to Chief Minister Raman Singh over the September 2014 Antargarh by-election.

The EC has asked the Chief Secretary to submit the inquiry report by January 7.

“The EC has directed the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh to urgently institute a suitable enquiry into the tape episode. He has been directed to submit a factual report latest by January 7 along with his comments,” an EC official said here.

The Indian Express today reported purported phone conversations between key players that suggested ensuring the withdrawal of Congress candidate Manturam Pawar in the Antagarh by-election.

The BJP termed the allegations ‘baseless’ and said this is not the first time the party has tasted victory in Antagarh.
