Centre tells states: ensure respect to flag, anthem

After having “received several complaints” about alleged disrespect to the national anthem and the Tricolour, the government has asked states to ensure “strict compliance” of laws, violations of which attract three years’ imprisonment or fine, or both.

In a communication to all states and Union territories, the Home Ministry has said it has received complaints about disrespect being shown to the national anthem and flag and asked them to ensure their honour is protected.

Sent last month, the communication has also attached a copy each of ‘The Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act 1971’ and ‘Flag Code of India, 2002’ and asked states and Union territories to ensure “strict compliance of the provisions contained in the Act and the Flag Code”.
