The political slugfest over the gangrape of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter in Bulandshahr hit a new low Wednesday as a senior BJP leader attacked Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan saying that the Samajwadi Party leader would feel the intensity of the incident only if his “wife and daughter were gangraped”.
“Miyan Azam Khan ke beti aur bibi se gang rape ho jaye tab Azam ki aankh khulegi Bulandshahr highway par 12 saal ki beti aur maa ke saath gang rape par ochhi baat kahi (Azam Khan’s eyes would open only if his daughter and wife were gangraped. He has made absurd comments on the gangrape of the 12-year-old girl and her mother in Bulandshahr),” state BJP spokesperson I P Singh said in a tweet.
Singh was reacting to Azam Khan’s controversial statement two days ago where he suggested that the Bulandshahr gangrape could be an outcome of political conspiracy against the ruling party, drawing condemnation from rival parties.
When contacted, Singh stood by his remarks. “I am deeply pained with the statement that Azam gave on the
Bulandshahr gangrape. I will not remove my tweet until Azam tenders apology for his remark,” Singh said. He claimed that the tweet was his personal view and not the BJP’s.
Singh, who claims to have had minister rank status in Kalyan Singh government, had been associated with BJP for the past 25 years.
Reacting to Singh’s comments, Azam said: “This is the culture of BJP. You can complain to one from whom you expect decent remarks.”
“I am a sensitive person. Bulandshahr incident is condemnable and strict action is needed in the case. Similar
incidents have also happened, if the government or I want to know the reality behind it, what is wrong in it? It will only increase the sections in the FIR and in future could save a girl. If someone abuses me for that, then he can do so,” he told reporters here.
Azam’s colleague in IP cabinet and Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, “By using objectionable
language for family of Azam sahab, BJP leaders have clarified their level of morality. There is a planned
conspiracy behind the attack on Azam sahab. After communal people failed to disturb harmony in the state, they have
started making cheap remarks on him.”
Chaudhary also said that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav took quick action but “BJP and RSS people are giving it
political colour” to the incident. He claimed that communal forces were playing with sentiments of victims’ family by presenting Azam’s statement in wrong reference.
Azam had earlier stoked controversy by terming the gangrape of the minor-daughter duo by a gang of robbers last week as attempt to “malign” the SP government by those who want to “come to power” in poll-bound UP.
