The Congress also hit out at the BJP in the context of the Prime Minister’s statement, saying its forerunner Jan Sangh and the RSS had criticised B R Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhai Patel when the Hindu Code Bill was brought in immediately after the Independence.

“While we stand for equality and fair treatment for women, no hasty step should be taken which may lead to a feeling of alienation among any community. All progressive steps need to be taken after wide consultation with those who would be affected,” Congress spokesperson R P N Singh said.

“For changing the personal law of any community, an atmosphere of trust and confidence needs to be built and different views taken on board,” he said.
