BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday filed a Rs 100-crore defamation suit against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and dared him to prove or at least provide detailed information about any criminal case against him as claimed by the latter.
“I have today filed a defamation case in the Kamrup Civil Judge’s court against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for making an allegation against me through a newspaper report that there are several criminal cases pending against me. I will later also file a criminal case against him,” Sarma, who was till a couple of years ago Gogoi’s most trusted lieutenant but joined the BJP this year, said at a press conference.
Sarma complained that Gogoi has been making unfounded allegations against him for the past few days “to which I cannot and should no remain silent”. Gogoi had reportedly alleged that Sarma was accused in several cases including the Louis Berger scandal and the Saradha scandal.
