A local court granted plea of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Rajkot city police and sent Delhi lawyer Shailendra Singh Jaat on police remand for six days on Tuesday. Jaat was arrested from Delhi for his alleged role in the abduction of city jewellers Bhaskar Parekh and Paresh Shah in year 2000.
Jaat was nabbed from his Rohini residence in Delhi by ATS on Sunday midnight. He was handed over to DCB on Monday. The DCB produced Jaat in the court of judicial magistrate (first class), VM Joshi on Tuesday evening with an application seeking his custody for 14 days. However, the court granted the police his custody till May 23 only.
The police say that Jaat was part of a gang including Asif Reza Khan, his brother Amir, Aftab Ansari and others who are alleged to be the founding members of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM). The police say Jaat was part of a four-member gang who had come from Delhi to Rajkot to execute the conspiracy of kidnapping Parekh and Shah and seek ransom which was to be later used to fund terror activities. A vehicle in which Jaat came to Rajkot was used in the kidnapping, say police.
The kidnappers had demanded Rs 20 crore from parents of the twin jewellers for their safe release. The police say that the kidnappers had extorted Rs 1.4 crore ransom before the jewellers were eventually rescued. ATS officials had said that Jaat had earned a degree in law and had been a practicing law in Delhi for the last many years.
The Malaviyanagar police had booked 54 persons in connection with the kidnapping and had arrested 49 accused.
Jaat becomes 50th person to be arrested by police in connection with the 16-year-old case. One of the accused was killed in an alleged encounter with police.
