THE state Assembly Monday passed a resolution to change the name of West Bengal to Bangla in Bengali, Bengal in English and Bangal in Hindi. The Opposition Congress, BJP and Left opposed the move.

The resolution was moved by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee under Rule 169 of the Constitution. It was passed by 189-31 votes. The proposal for name change was adopted by the state Cabinet on August 2.

Speaking on the motion, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: “The name Bangla has a historical and cultural background. I don’t have a problem with the name ‘Bango’ either. But most people want the name ‘Bangla’. In English, it will be ‘Bengal’ so there is no confusion with the name of neighbouring Bangladesh.”

“Whenever we go out of India or to some other state, we are known as people from Bengal. In 2011, we had proposed to change the name of the state, but it was held back by the Centre. There was no decision. So we decided to bring it again,” she added.

Speaking to mediapersons later, Mamata said the proposal would be sent to the Centre. “I will request the Centre to pursue the matter so that it can be placed in Parliament. We want it to be done as early as possible,” she said. The chief minister added that she had discussed the matter with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan said he wanted a mass vote or a commission to decide on the issue. On Mannan’s statement, Mamata said: “We all had gone through a mass vote three months ago in the state and the results are before us.”
