The panel backed by BJP in the elections to Baroda District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, or Baroda Dairy, on Wednesday won six out of 13 seats. Four seats went to Congress-supported candidates, while three seats were won by Independents.
The election to the 13 zones of Baroda Dairy, spread across Vadodara, Chhota Udepur and Narmada districts, was also held on Wednesday.
As many as 1,128 members from village-level milk societies affiliated to Baroda Dairy exercised their franchise to select the candidates.
“The exercise went off smoothly as we finished counting within an hour after the elections were held till 1 pm. The results are not declared on the basis of political parties as we only declare names of winning candidates,” returning officer and deputy collector DR Patel said said.
While candidates do not contest on the mandate of a political party, BJP and Congress back their candidates. For the first time, BJP decided to select its own candidates for the election.
In the previous board, BJP MLA Dinesh Patel and Congress-supported independent candidate G B Solanki were elected chairman and vice-chairman, with four members each supporting BJP and Congress.
The election was rescheduled after the High Court asked for the same following a PIL challenging the state government order deferring the election post December 5, due to the local body elections. Congress member Sangramsinh Rathva, who was among the candidates winning the elections, had filed the case.
Following results, BJP said that at least two party leaders supported Congress-backed members in Chhota Udepur, Waghodia, Bodeli and Pavi Jetpur seats, or else the party could have won more seats. District BJP president Satish Patel said Padra MLA Dinesh Patel and Waghodia MLA Madhubhai Srivastava were alleged to have worked against the interest of the party.
“We have received complaints from our members that these two leaders acted against the interest of the party in the Baroda Dairy polls. We will come up with a fact-finding report on the issue and take action accordingly,” Patel said.
Among winners are Dinesh Patel aka Dinu Mama, who is the BJP MLA from Padra and chairman of the outgoing board; Satish Patel, also a BJP MLA from Karjan; former vice chairman G B Solanki who recently joined BJP; Congress supported members Satish Makwana, Kripalsinh Mehraul, among others.
The election for the post of chairman and vice chairman will be held within a month, for which a member will require a minimum seven votes. The role played by independent candidates will be crucial in this.
