Bahraich: Clash after man asks about Hindu girl

Heavy police force have been deployed at Hindu-dominated Qazi Katra and the adjoining Mansoorganj, where the Muslim community has considerable presence.

Tension broke out in Qazi Katra area of Bahraich district after a Muslim youth inquired about a girl belonging to the Hindu community. Following this, both groups clashed, leaving three persons injured on Sunday evening.

On Monday, police registered an FIR on charges including rioting and criminal intimidation at Dargah police station. Four persons, belonging to Muslim community, have been arrested. Raids are being conducted to trace other accused.

Heavy police force have been deployed at Hindu-dominated Qazi Katra and the adjoining Mansoorganj, where the Muslim community has considerable presence.

Bahraich SP Salik Ram Verma claimed the situation was under control. “A Muslim youth from Mansoorganj had gone to Qazi Katra and inquired from a boy about a girl, who is a dance teacher. The boy went on to call others from the area and they all assaulted the youth,” he said.

“The youth later returned with others. Both groups clashed and indulged in brick-batting. The police rushed to the spot and used force to disperse the troublemakers,” he added.

Dargah police Station Officer Shailendra Tripathi said: “An FIR has been filed on the complaint of Jagat Ram, a local, in connection with yesterday’s incident. Four persons have been arrested.”
