Assam: 7 more with ‘jihadis’ JMB links arrested

Among those arrested is an Imam of the Amguri masjid, who was instrumental in motivating young men to join Jamat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh.

The police on Thursday arrested seven more persons who are members of an extended module of the Jamat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in Chirang district of western Assam, thus taking the total number of such arrests to 29 since September last year.

“While we arrested seven persons late last night from Daukhanagar and Amgrui villages in Chirang district, their interrogation has brought to light the fact that the module had also set up a physical training camp in Amguri in addition to the Daukhanagar arms training camp that was busted in September last year,” Assam Police Additional DG LR Bishnoi, who is in charge of the Bodoland districts said.

The seven arrested are Joynal Abedin (32), Rezzak Ali (21), Soleman Ali (28), Dildar Ali (23), Md Nurul Islam (27), Rafiqul Islam (22) and Ukhiluddin (33). Among them Joynal Abedin is also an Imam of the Amguri masjid, who was instrumental in motivating young men in different villages in Chirang, Baska and Kokrajhar to join the jihadi group, Additional DGP Bishnoi said.

With the arrest of Joynal Abedin, the number of imams arrested in connection with the JMB module has risen to two. “We had earlier arrested another imam called Abu Bakkar Siddique on April 16. Siddique was an imam of a masjid in Tulsibeel,” Bishnoi said.

The police had only on April 16 arrested four persons from different locations in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. While Sahanur Alom, one of the prime accused in the Burdwan blast case was arrested in December 2014, the police have subsequently arrested 29 more persons, a couple of whom are recruiters, motivators and trainers, while the remaining ones are recruits who had undergone various kind of training ranging from motivational courses to arms training and manufacture and handling of various kinds of explosives.
