AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s decision to provide legal aid to five IS suspects, arrested from Hyderabad, would fuel terrorism in the country, the Centre said on Sunday.

Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Owaisi’s statement boosted the morale of the terrorists. “One should not fall so low in politics as to appear to favour terrorists and terrorism. Play politics and take on the opposition, but don’t do something which shows that you are on the side of terrorism,” Naqvi said.

He said that the decision would not be accepted by anyone in the country, irrespective of his or her religion.

The AIMIM chief had Friday announced that his party would provide legal aid to the five IS suspects arrested from Hyderabad by the NIA.

The BJP, meanwhile, said Owaisi’s decision amounted to “betraying” the country. BJP secretary Shrikant Sharma said, “This is betrayal of the country. On the one hand you condemn the IS and on the other hand you support those who are involved in such acts. The investigating agencies should take action against him within the legal framework. Those who support terrorism directly or indirectly should be condemned,” he said.
