Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela has demanded that the deputy speaker of the state assembly should be chosen from the Opposition.
Vaghela made the demand after BJP named former minister Ramanlal Vora and Shambhuji Thakor to be fielded as party’s candidates for the post of speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. The elections to the two posts would be held on Monday when the monsoon session of the assembly begins.
Vaghela, in a statement, said that it had always been a tradition to have speaker from the ruling party and deputy speaker from the Oppositon. But, Narendra Modi, after taking over as the chief minister, didn’t appoint deputy speaker and the post had been lying vacant since 2002.
Vaghela said that the Congress had been demanding appointment of a deputy speaker from the opposition party but the BJP did not accept the request.
With the new dispensation to fill up the post of deputy speaker, he said that the Congress party would be fielding MLA Chandrikaben Bariya, a tribal, as its candidate for the deputy speaker’s post. Vaghela hoped that BJP would elect Chandrikaben Bariya to empower tribals and women in the state.
