Stating that removal of chief minister Anandiben Patel was a “damage-control exercise” before the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections because Bhartiya Janta Party felt that they would lose elections under her, Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh said in Ahmedabad Tuesday adding that, the “replacement of a puppet by another puppet will not do any good to Gujarat.”

Addressing reporters at the Circuit House Annexe, Ashutosh said that Anandiben Patel was merely a puppet in the hands of a mastermind. “Just changing the existing puppet by another puppet is not going to improve the political conditions in the state. What is required is the removal of mastermind himself to ameliorate the conditions in the state”, he stated, adding that “only the resignation of chief minister will not do.”

When asked to reveal the identity of the “mastermind” he’s referring to, he replied, “all of you know who is the mastermind in the game. It does not require to name him.”

Stating that the BJP was projecting CM’s resignation as a “big sacrifice” on her part, he said that “the reality is that she has been sacked owing to administration’s highhandedness on Patidars, atrocities on dalits and the rampant corruption under her rule that was raised by AAP.”

A former journalist, Ashutosh said that the BJP leadership was disturbed by AAP’s growing popularity in Gujarat and this led to the sacking of Anandiben Patel. “The argument that Anandiben Patel has turned 75 and hence, she has offered to step down on her own, is a smokescreen to hide their failures. If it is true, then why is BJP not asking Union Minister Kalraj Mishra who is above 75 years and Madhya Pradesh minister Babulal Gaur who is 85 years old”, he said.

Stating that the BJP state government first registered cases against 438 Patidars and then declared the withdrawal of 391, he said, “booking of FIRs and withdrawing them later on indicates these cases were false and there is no democracy in Gujarat. There is total dictatorship. The government books cases whenever it wants and withdraws them on its own whims and fancies”.

Ashutosh also demanded withdrawal of cases under sedition charges and externment orders. He said that cases registered against dalit youths should also be withdrawn immediately.
