AMID SPECULATION that the Congress and Punjab People’s Party chief Manpreet Singh Badal were set to finalise a tie-up, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Wednesday said he “welcomed Manpreet’s encouraging response to the idea of a secular alliance with the Congress in the interest of the state for the forthcoming elections.”

In a statement, Amarinder said, “We have multiple points of convergence with Manpreet and I hope together we can steer Punjab out of the social, political and economic anarchy that the Akalis and the BJP have pushed it into during the past nine years of their misrule.” He said “when the goal is common, the commonality in the means can always be worked out”. While sources have been claiming the political tie-up would be sealed on January 15 in Delhi, Manpreet has been categorically denying any such move.

Amarinder said he always favoured a “broad-based understanding and alliance with like-minded, secular parties to ensure that the Akali-BJP government is ousted”.
