Launching scheme to boost Khadi with the help of NIFT, Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Thursday that a senior BJP leader had asked him to shift NIFT from Rae Bareli saying that it does not look nice there. Alleging that the senior BJP leader wanted him to rather shift Rae Bareli NIFT to Lucknow, the CM said, instead his government gave proposal for two more NIFT, one in Lucknow and another in Noida but added that his request letter seems to have been lost.
“A senior BJP leader met me and said that NIFT does not look nice in Rae Bareli. The leader wanted to bring NIFT to Lucknow but I am a Samajwadi with a big heart and does not believe in snatching things that are once given. Thus, I rather wrote a letter to the leader saying that my Government would arrange for land for NIFT in Lucknow and Noida well. But I do not know, where that letter is lost” Chief Minsiter Akhilesh Yadav said at his residence in Lucknow, where even students of NIFT, Rae Bareli were present along with ministers and officers of UP Government.
With elections round the corner, Akhilesh also announced that his Government would give “free power-loom” for weavers machines adding that if he can give free laptops to students then why not free power-loom machine to weavers. This Thursday, he launched distribution of 75 power-loom machines for Bundelkhand region—50 for Jhansi and 25 for Banda.
Adding that Khadi reminds him of Mahatma Gandhi, Yadav said that there was a need to do more research and also to do marketing and branding of the product, which would be done with the help of NIFT, Rae Bareli students. He said that he personally has been wearing Khadi, ever since he came into active politics.
Uttar Pradesh Khadi and Village industries minister Brahma Shankar Tripathi informed that he has made wearing Khadi compulsory for the employees of Khadi Gram Udyog Board and suggested that the Chief Minister also makes Khadi compulsory for all state government employees, atleast once a week. Tripathi informed that Government is also in the process of establishing a research centre in Kushinagar to boost Khadi.
However, Chief Minister turned down the request saying that maintenance of Khadi is very expensive and instead said that he would advise officials to try and wear Khadi on Sundays.
