The demise of Meghalaya MP and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma Friday came as a shock for the Northeast with leaders cutting across party lines describing it as an irreparable loss to the country in general and the region in particular. Meghalaya, his home state, declared a seven-day mourning.
In Shillong, where the Meghalaya assembly’s budget session had just begun, Speaker Abu Taher Mondal broke the news after Governor’s address and adjourned the House for the day. CM Mukul Sangma described Sangma as an “incomparable” man who made Meghalaya known to the rest of the country. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, Arunachal Pradesh Governor J P Rajkhowa and Arunachal Pradesh CM Kalikho Pul too expressed grief.
