A 90-year-old Dalit man was allegedly killed and later set ablaze by a drunken youth outside a temple at Bilgaon village in Hamirpur on Wednesday afternoon. The accused, Sanjay Tiwari, was caught by the locals and arrested. He was produced before a court, which sent him to jail on Thursday.

According to police, the incident took place when the victim — Chimaa Ahirwar — was coming out of the temple with his wife Basanti and cousin Veerpal.

Station officer of Jalalpur police station, Ram Asrey Yadav, said Tiwari demanded money from Chimaa to drink. When the latter refused, he allegedly ran after them with an axe. No one was present inside the temple. While Basanti and Veerpal fled, Tiwari hit Chimaa with the axe at the temple’s gate. He then dragged his body outside the temple campus and set it ablaze, Yadav said.

The temple, built by members of the SC community, is located outside the village. Basanti and Veerpal called locals for help, who informed the police. Circle Officer of Hamirpur, Rajesh Pandey, said when police arrived at the spot, Tiwari had burnt Chimaa’s body.

Hamirpur SP Muniraj said Tiwari appears to be mentally ill, adding that two days ago, he attacked the temple’s priest.
