A 16-year-old girl, whose family was forced to leave their home in Baghpat during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, was allegedly raped twice in one day in Shamli on Wednesday.
The girl’s father, a labourer, lodged an FIR Thursday night, and alleged that the accused had threatened him not to approach the police.
The FIR against Shahrukh, 45, Zulfam, 25, and Junaid, 23, was lodged on charges of gangrape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
On Friday, police arrested Shahrukh and produced him before court, which sent him to judicial custody.
Quoting the girl’s father, Naresh Pal Singh, Station Officer at the Kandhla police station, said the girl had on Wednesday gone to the fields, where her mother was working.
Around 2 pm, as she was returning home, Zulfam allegedly caught her on the way and raped her at a secluded place. He then let her go after warning her not to tell anyone, police said. As the girl was walking home, Shahrukh and Junaid allegedly caught her and took her to the latter’s dairy, where they raped her, the father stated in the complaint.
According to police, Junaid’s father came to the dairy in the evening and found the girl. As he was inquiring about her from his son and his son’s friend, the girl’s family, along with some locals looking for her, reached the spot around 9 pm and took her home.
Singh said the girl’s family — her parents and three siblings — have been living in a rented house in a Shamli village after they left their home in Baghpat in 2013. Circle Officer Narendra Pal Singh confirmed that the family had left their home after the riots.
