A local court in Jaunpur Friday held alleged HuJI operative Mohammad Alam Giri Hussain alias Ronny guilty in the 2005 Shramjeevi Express blast case. The blast in the New Delhi-bound train had left 12 people dead and 18 injured. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence Saturday and give the verdict on another accused in the case, Obedur Rahman alias Babu Bhai, on August 2.

“Additional District and Sessions Judge Buddhi Ram held 42-year-old Ronny guilty of different charges including murder, attempt to murder, Explosives Act and Railway Act. The court is likely to pronounce judgment on quantum of sentence on Saturday,” government counsel Vijay Shankar Yadav told The Indian Express. Yadav further said that the court has also fixed August 2 for pronouncement of judgment on Obedur Rahman. “Separate files for court trial were made for Ronny and Obedur Rehman in the case,” Yadav said, adding 43 prosecution witnesses, including seven injured victims and two police constables, were examined during Ronny’s trial.

“In the case of Obedur Rehman, 52 prosecution witnesses were examined,” the government counsel said and added that both Obedur Rahman and Ronny belong to Bangladesh and are currently lodged at Jaunpur district jail. Contacted, Ronny’s lawyer, Shyam Shankar Tiwari said: “As per the police investigation, Ronny, along with another alleged HuJI operative Nafikul Vishwas, had planted bomb in the train. Ronny was arrested in Delhi in 2006 on charges of Foreigners Act. A Delhi court had sentenced Ronny to three years imprisonment, which he has already completed while being lodged in the jail.”

According to prosecution, the case dates back to July 28, 2005 when a powerful blast in a compartment of the New Delhi-bound Shramjeevi Express left 12 people dead and 18 injured. The blast took place near Harpalganj railway station in Jaunpur district. The first breakthrough in the case was made when Delhi Police arrested alleged HuJI operatives Amisul and Mahibul and they revealed the names of Obedur Rahman, Hilal alias Hilaluddin, Nafikul Vishwas and Ronny and spoke about their involvement in the Shramjeevi blast. While Ronny was arrested in October, 2006 in Delhi, others were arrested by UP STF.

During trial, Amisul and Mahibul backtracked and even refused to identify the accused in the court. They claimed to have not given any information to the Delhi Police about the Shramjeevi blast, the prosecution counsel said. Two other witnesses, constable Shyamji Yadav and Suresh Yadav of Government Railway Police (GRP), however, told the court that they had seen Ronny and another person who looked like Hilal wandering at the platform and peeping inside the bogies of Shramjeevi Express at the Varanasi railway station, which is around 100 kilometre from the place of incident.

The government counsel added that the trial against Hilal and Nafikul was still pending as they were sent to Hyderabad to face trial in another case. Both are presently lodged at Central Jail, Hyderabad. “Three other accused, identified as Mohammad Sharif alias Kanchan, Dr Sayeed and Yahia alias Ghulam Rajdhani, are still on the run,” he added.
