TWO WOMEN members of a dance group were allegedly abducted and gangraped by 10-12 men in Kagraul police station area of Agra district on June 25. Both the victims are reported to have suffered serious injuries.
According to reports, three women of the dance group were abducted after their performance in Digrauta village. The third woman, the 25-year-old proprietor of the dance group, claimed she was not raped after she pleaded that she was pregnant.
The two victims, both Dalits from Mathura district, met Agra SSP Preetinder Singh on Wednesday evening and got an FIR registered against the accused. The police on Thursday arrested two of the accused, identified as Raj and Jitender, who had booked the dance group for the performance in the village and were reportedly involved in the gangrape.
SHO, Kagaraul police station, Hari Shankar Chand said the two women claimed to be working for an orchestra band from Mathura. They said they were hired to perform at a private event in Digrauta village.
“As per their complaint, they were sexually assaulted while they were returning home. The women claimed that during the performance, there was a heated argument among some of the audience members, after which they decided to leave the show. They headed for Mathura in a vehicle owned by the proprietor of the group. Two men, Raj and Jitender, also boarded the vehicle and said they would escort them safely out of the village,” he said.
After travelling a few kilometres, the two men reportedly asked the driver to stop the vehicle at Nagla Brija village.
According to the victims, their vehicle was being followed by about 10 men on a motorcycle and SUV. “Raj and Jitender first dragged one of the women out of the vehicle and took her to a nearby field, while the driver and other women were held captive by the other men,” said the SHO. Later, all the men allegedly raped the two women.
“We were taken to a secluded place and around a dozen men raped us at gunpoint,” said a victim who is 22 years old. The victims said they managed to reach home the next morning, after the accused left.
“They were 10-12 in number… When they tried to drag me, I told them that I am four months pregnant,” said the proprietor. She said two of the accused had met them during a performance at a birthday party at Nagla Kurray village of Agra on June 23, where they hired them for a performance at their village the next day. “Since we did not have any other assignment, we agreed,” she said.
“I am an eyewitness and will speak in court,” said her driver.
The victims were admitted to Agra hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Ramesh Fauji, pradhan of Digrauta village, confirmed that a dance event was organised in the village on the night of June 24, which started at around 8 pm and ended at around 12.30 am.
The police have lodged an FIR against 12 persons under IPC Section 376 D, 342 and SC/ST Act.
