At least 11 passengers were killed and 20 others injured when the bus in which they were travelling rolled down into a 400 feet deep gorge on the Ramnagar-Basantgarh road in hilly Udhampur district on Friday.
Giving details, sources said that the ill-fated bus was on way from Ramnagar to Basantgarh when its driver lost control of the steering at Keya village. The cause of accident could not be immediately ascertained, but sources said that the road was in a poor condition and could not support heavy traffic.
Civil and police officials rushed to the spot after hearing about the accident and launched rescue operation with the help of locals. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital at Ramnagar and from there, two seriously injured were referred to the Government Medical College Hospital at Jammu.
The Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, announced Rs one lakh ex-gratia relief for the next of kin of each deceased, Rs 25,000 for critically injured and Rs 10,000 for the injured. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry to probe the cause of accident as, according to him, the condition of road at the site of accident was not bad.
