Maharashtra on Monday reported a slight dip in the number of fresh cases, with 51,751 more people testing positive. The state also reported 258 more deaths. On Sunday, more than 63,000 people had tested positive for Covid in the state.

Haryana has announced night curfew from 9 pm till 5 am, with effect from tonight. The number of active cases in Haryana has doubled in the last 11 days, from 10,300 on April 1 to over 20,000 on April 11. Moreover, Uttar Pradesh has reported 13,685 new Covid-19 cases and 72 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, an expert panel of India’s central drug authority has recommended granting approval to Russian Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V for emergency use in the country with certain conditions, sources said. The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) on Monday took up the application of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories seeking emergency use authorisation for Sputnik V.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has stated that no meals will be served on domestic flights with a duration of less than two hours to curb the Covid spread. India’s new Covid-19 cases surpassed Brazil’s tally on Monday, making it the second worst-hit country in the world. It now accounts for one in every six daily infections worldwide.

Ongoing semester will be online: JNU V-C to students

Kerala imposes fresh Covid restrictions

Kerala Monday announced fresh restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the state. Similar to the national picture, there has been a surge in new infections in Kerala, with the positivity rate climbing to 12.53% on Monday.

At a high-level meeting chaired by the chief secretary, it was decided to bring in fresh measures to curb the movement of people and thereby stem the transmission of the virus.

Hence, public meetings in open spaces cannot be attended by more than 200 people while those in closed spaces shall have attendance not exceeding 100 persons. The duration of such meetings should not exceed two hours. The restrictions would apply to weddings and other functions. Instead of ‘sadyas’, Kerala’s traditional meal served on banana leaves, arrangements should be made to offer guests packed food. Read more

Vice-President Naidu, PM Modi to hold meeting with governors on Wednesday to discuss Covid crisis

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with Governors of various states on April 14 on the COVID-19 situation, sources said on Monday.

It would be the first meeting of this kind during the pandemic and has been convened amid the Centre looking to push for stronger adherence to the pandemic protocols among citizens across the country.

The development comes days after Modi in a virtual meeting with chief ministers had called for the involvement of governors in handling the pandemic and also of personalities from different fields to push compliance with COVID-appropriate behaviour and pandemic management guidelines, including for providing vaccination to eligible people. India on Monday reported 1,68,912 new Covid-19 cases and 904 deaths in last 24 hours, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The total number of cases stand at 1,35,27,717. There are 12,01,009 active cases in the country at present while 1,21,56,529 people have recovered from the disease. The death toll has risen to 1,70,179. As many as 10,45,28,565 people have been administered the Covid-19 vaccine.

At a review meeting on the Covid-19 situation in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Monday said several steps are being taken to increase the number of beds in both private and government hospitals in the city. Some government and private hospitals will again be converted into fully COVID facilities, government officials said. "Held review meeting. We r taking several steps to increase beds in both pvt and govt sectors. Urge everyone to cooperate. 1. Pl pl follow covid protocols 2. Don’t rush to hospital unless necessary 3. Go n vaccinate if u r eligible," Kejriwal said in a tweet.

The Gujarat High Court Monday heard a suo motu PIL on the Covid-19 situation in the state and said it is not satisfied with the government's policy. Suggesting ways to control the rise in cases, the court said number of people at weddings can be capped at 50, booths can be set up in housing societies and religious centres can be used as covid care centres/isolation facilities.  The court asked why remdesivir injections were not available at every Covid hospital. "When 27000 Remdesivir injections are available for Gujarat, find out how many are unused. CJ also asks, "Why injections are not available in every COVID hospital?"

Central teams sent by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in surge districts of three states of concern – Maharashtra, Punjab, and Chhattisgarh – that have been reporting the highest numbers of new Covid-19 deaths in the country have identified a certain set of problems in these states.

  • Maharashtra has very high hospital occupancy in three districts; three other districts are facing problems with oxygen supply; malfunctioning ventilators found in two districts.
  • In two districts of Punjab there are no dedicated Covid hospital; there is a shortage of healthcare workers in three districts, and no RTPCR testing lab in one.
  • In Chhattisgarh, there is a shortage of RTPCR testing in three districts; four districts have high hospital bed occupancy rates; the state capital has limited oxygen availability.

Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has written separate letters to the health secretaries of Maharashtra, Punjab, and Chhattisgarh, asking them to urgently address the concerns raised by the central teams, including hiring contractual health workers, and ramping up hospital infrastructure. He has flagged specific concerns with these three states.

Sunday marked the beginning of a nationwide four-day-long 'Tika Utsav (vaccine festival)' for COVID-19 (from April 11 (Jyotirao Phule’s birth anniversary) to April 14 (B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary)), following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with state chief ministers to help people eligible for vaccination to get immunised during the period. "We're going to begin 'Tika Utsav' today nationwide. I urge countrymen to abide by 4 things – assist those who need help getting inoculated, help people in COVID treatment, wear masks & motivate others & if someone tests positive, create micro-containment zone in the area," Modi said.
