Days after mass cancellation of IndiGo flights led to chaos at airports across the country, the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture Wednesday questioned the CEO of IndiGo, the Civil Aviation Secretary and representatives of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on the disruption in flight operations and the inconvenience caused to passengers.

The committee, headed by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, was said to have asked the DGCA how it could not anticipate mass cancellation of flights and not prepare for such an eventuality.

Parliamentary committee proceedings are privileged and details of exchanges between members during meetings are not made public.

The DGCA was said to have made a detailed presentation on how the problem was precipitated and the subsequent steps taken to mitigate the problem.

Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha too was asked about the role played by the ministry and whether it was aware of a problem building up in the sector. He was said to have pointed out that an investigation was underway and would be completed within 15 days.

The committee, it is learnt, will call the stakeholders again once the probe is over.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers was said to have provided details on how the new norms of rest for pilots led to pilots being stuck in different places and the collapse of operations. There was also a presentation by Captain Sam Thomas, president of Bengaluru-based Airline Pilot Association of India.
