Heavy rain and snowfall is expected over a few parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in the next two to three days, due to an intense western disturbance in the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, adding that this is the first severe western disturbance of the season, and will affect northwest and central India until October 17.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), IMD said that a western disturbance started affecting Jammu and Kashmir since the night of October 13. However, since the evening of October 14, there has been moderate to intense convection moving from Jammu to the northernmost Punjab and Himachal Pradesh under its influence.
As per IMD Forecast since a week, a WD started affecting Jammu-Kashmir since 13th night.
With slight eastward movement this WD now runs along Long. 68°E. Under its influence moderate to intense convection can be seen moving from Jammu Division to northern most Punjab 1/5— India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept) October 15, 2023

IMD predicts another western disturbance is likely to merge with the current one, which will eventually lead to an increase in precipitation activity over Northwest India from Sunday (October 15). The merger of both the western disturbances from October 15 to October 16 will likely result in heavy rainfall and snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the period.
South Punjab, south Haryana, Delhi, and north Rajasthan are likely to have overcast skies with very light rain or drizzling on Sunday and Monday. North Punjab and north Haryana might also experience light to moderate rainfall on these two days.
As dry northwesterly winds are likely to prevail over northwest India, the temperatures in the region will fall by two to four degrees from October 17, news agency PTI reported.
