A SUPERINTENDENT of jail and three deputy superintendents of jail have been “additionally deputed” at district jail in Rohtak for the security of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Haryana government told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday. The state goverment added that the additional security deployment has been done along with an assistant superintendent of jail and other jail officials who are deputed in the ward itself where Ram Rahim is confined. The Dera chief is serving his sentences in the rape and murder cases.
“He is lodged in special security ward for security purposes and sand bags have been put on the roof and front of the grills to avoid any aerial attack,” read a reply filed by the government through Assistant Advocate General Neeraj Poswal in response to a petition filed by one Dr Mohit Gupta, a dental doctor, who identified himself as a Dera follower and claimed that the Dera chief was under threat inside the jail. The petition was dismissed with a cost of Rs 50,000 to be paid to the Haryana Legal Services Authority.
During the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Justice Amol Rattan Singh read the communication sent by District and Sessions Judge, Rohtak and also a statement recorded before the latter by Gurmeet Ram Rahim himself. On October 30, the Court had asked the judicial officer to send a status report. The Sessions Judge in his report said that the Dera chief in his statement has told him that he is “hale and hearty” with sufficient security and medical facilities. There are four other prisoners in the barrack where he is imprisoned and it is protected by a barbed wire. Three constables and six head constables have also been deployed for Ram Rahim’s security at the barrack.
Justice Singh, who was Administrative Judge of Rohtak Sessions Judge till April 2019 and had visited the Sunaria Jail in March, during the hearing said he also remembers that a permanent tent has been installed outside the barrack and an officer remains there all the time. Quoting the Sessions Judge’s communication further, the court also said the convict is allowed to meet his relatives and a medical examination is also conducted each month by doctors of PGI Rohtak.
In the statement given by Ram Rahim to the Sessions Judge, he denied knowing any Dr Mohit Gupta, the petitioner, and also informed the court that he has not given permission to Dr Gupta to file the petition. In his statement given to the Sessions Judge, the Dera head, while stating that he is satisfied with the arrangements at the jail, has made a request for video calling facility. At present, he is allowed to make a voice call to his family members.
In the report of state government, the court was informed that CCTV cameras have also been installed at sensitive locations with 24×7 surveillance and a dedicated CCTV control room has also been established in the jail.
