CONGRESS LEADER Hardik Patel and over 300 women activists were detained by the police when they were on their way to meet jailed former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt at Palanpur jail in Banaskantha on Wednesday.
Patel claimed on Tuesday through his official Twitter account that he intended to visit Palanpur with 300 women activists, who would tie a rakhi on Bhatt’s wrist ahead of Raksha Bandhan on August 15.
Bhatt is undergoing a life sentence at Palanpur jail in a case of 1990 custodial death case.
Police said the group was detained for about one-and-a-half hours on Wednesday morning on their way to Palanpur jail. “We had to detain Hardik and 300 of his supporters. There are certain rules and regulations (for visiting a) jail. So many people cannot visit a person in prison at the same time, so we had to detain them in the interest of law and order. Later, Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife, his son and his advocate were able to meet him,” Banaskantha district’s Superintendent of Police Pradip Shejul said.
Later, Patel wrote on Twitter: “We have all been arrested…The police have not been able to tell us on what grounds we have been arrested…”
