The Uttarakhand police have arrested five women in connection to the violent protests in Haldwani on February 8 in which five people were killed. The five women, aged between 25 and 50 years, are residents of Banbhoolpura, the police said.
This takes the total number of arrests in connection with the violence to 89. The violence erupted after the administration conducted a drive to demolish a mosque and a madrasa allegedly built on Nazool land. As stones were pelted, cars torched and the local police station surrounded by a mob, the administration called for shoot-at-sight orders.

Abdul Malik, who is considered to be the main accused in the case, and his son Abdul Moeed were already arrested. This was despite a letter submitted by Malik’s representatives to the authorities claiming that he was in Noida, Delhi and Greater Noida around the time of the violence.
An FIR registered on the complaint of Banbhoolpura police station in-charge Neeraj Bhakuni, however, alleged that when the demolition process started, the father and son and 14 others led the mob.
