A senior minister in the Congress government in Karnataka resigned on Wednesday after local television channels aired a purported video clip of the minister in a compromising position with a woman who had reportedly approached him for an official favour.
H Y Meti, 71, who quit as Excise Minister, was considered a close associate of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and was only recently inducted into the state Cabinet in June. He was the second minister from CM’s OBC community.
The issue of a purported sex clip involving Meti had been in the news for several days with an RTI activist from Bellary, Rajashekhar, stating that he was in possession of a video of the minister in a compromising position with a young woman.
Meti had denied the existence of video and had dared the RTI activist to release it.
The woman involved in the matter had initially told local channels that the minister did not take advantage of her, but she later changed her statement. The woman is related to the minister.
On Wednesday, after local channels broadcast the clip, the minister announced his resignation from the state Cabinet but claimed that he was innocent.
“I have not done anything wrong, but I am resigning to protect the image of the government,’’ Meti told reporters.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who accepted the resignation, said a full investigation will be conducted into the Meti affair.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted by the CID to ascertain the truth of the matter. Meti has denied the allegations and claimed that there is an agenda. He has voluntarily resigned. I have accepted the resignation and forwarded it to the Governor,’’ Siddaramaiah said.
“I had stated that action would be taken when the CD is released,’’ he added.
The alleged scandal has come as a huge embarrassment to the Congress government, close on the heels of another controversy stirred by Minister Tanvir Sait after video footage emerged showing him purportedly watching pictures of skimpily clad girls on his mobile at a public function recently.
