Rajkot-Surat, Rajkot Diu and Rajkot-Bhuj are other routes on which libraries will be opened from Thursday.

In two novel initiatives, the Rajkot division of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) launched libraries on board buses and also flagged off mobile waiting-rooms for its major passenger pickup points in the city on Wednesday.

Rajkot collector Manisha Chandra launched the new facilities at ceremony held in Central Bus Station of GSRTC in the city on Tuesday. The collector threw open libraries aboard Rajkot-Ahmedabad (departure, 3 pm) and Rajkot-Nathdwara (departure 5:30 pm) routes. The collector also launched the mobile waiting-room which will be stationed at Greenland Chowkadi and Gondal Chowkadi, two major passenger pickup stands on the outskirts of the city.

“There were suggestions from passengers to keep some books on board buses of long distance. We agreed with them and have decided set up libraries on 10 routes. The Lions Club of Rajkot has offered help to open such libraries on other buses also and we shall go ahead in a phased manner,” Dinesh Jethva, Rajkot divisional controller of GSRTC, told The Indian Express.

Jethva added that Rajkot-Surat, Rajkot Diu and Rajkot-Bhuj are other routes on which libraries will be opened from Thursday. Each library contains eight to 10 books and newspapers, he further said.

Officials said the waiting-room will be stationed at Gereenland Chowkadi from 5 am to 1 pm.

“The mobile waiting-room will have capacity to seat around 30 passengers at a time. There will be books, newspapers and water and passengers will also be able to book their tickets from these mobile waiting-rooms,” Jethva further added.

The Rajkot division of GSRTC has brought a scrapped minibus from Ahmedabad division and turned it into the mobile waiting-room after refurbishing it. Officials said the waiting-room will be stationed at Gereenland Chowkadi from 5 am to 1 pm. Then it will be taken to Gondal Chowkadi where it will remain stationed from 2 pm to 7 pm.

“We don’t have any formal bus station or waiting room. So the mobile waiting-room has been launched with an aim to cater to the needs of passengers using these two points,” the divisional controller explained.

The collector also threw open another waiting room having capacity of accommodating 45 persons at Centra Bus Station for passengers who book their tickets in advance.
