Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Vadodara, Sunil Kulkarni, is a bank defaulter, who has been untraceable for credit societies in Maharashtra, where his firm ASK Infracon Projects Pvt. Ltd. is headquartered. Kulkarni’s defaulter status became known on Thursday after Special Recovery Officer of a Maharashtra-based credit society submitted letters to bring to the notice of the District Election Officer, Vinod Rao, that Kulkarni had outstanding dues of several lakhs with the patsansthas (credit institutions), a fact that does not reflect in his affidavit submitted on Wednesday. Kulkarni will now furnish details of his liabilities in a fresh affidavit by Friday.

A letter from the Special Recovery officer of Sant Dyaneshwar Gramin Bigarsheti Sahkari Patsanstha, located at Sangamner in Ahmedabad dated April 9, states, “Sunil Digambar Kulkarni is a candidate in the Vadodara Lok Sabha constituency. He is a member of our Patsanstha. He has taken a loan of Rs 2,88,000 on  October 16, 2000. Kulkarni has not repaid the loan as per the terms of agreement of our bank. Hence, our patsanstha has filed a recovery suit against him as a borrower and guarantor before Kopargaon court and concerned authority has issued a Recovery Certificate to the effect against the borrower and guarantor jointly and severely.”

The letter also states that the order of the Kopargaon court has been forwarded to the Sangamner Court for necessary legal action. It states that the outstanding amount due against Kulkarni is Rs 12.35 lakh.

Kulkarni has been served another notice by another credit co-operative society from Sangamner, Gagannagara Maharaj Nagari Sahakari Patsanstha. The society has also written to Rao over Kulkarni not repaying a loan of Rs 1 lakh. The credit society has informed that the outstanding dues against Kulkarni stand at Rs 14.67 lakh.

Kulkarni’s affidavit, filed on April 9, does not give details of these outstanding dues agaisnt him. District Returning officer, Vinod Rao, asked Kulkarni to furnish the details of these loans by Friday morning. Rao said, “The objection has been raised over Kulkarni’s nomination as he is said to be a bank defaulter. While it may not be sufficient ground for rejection of nomination, the final decision will be taken tomorrow.” Incidentally. Kulkarni has not mentioned the name of his wife in his affidavit.
