‘We may have made a mistake’: Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor sits on day-long fast

Following the rape of a 14-month-old girl, Thakor had publicly blamed a "non-Gujarati" for the crime. However, in his address at the 'Sadbhavna Upvas' venue near his residence in Ranip area, he asserted he never indulged in spreading hatred.

Under fire for inciting the recent attacks on migrants in Gujarat and the alleged role of his outfit — Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena (GKTS) — in the incident, Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor on Thursday observed a day-long symbolic ‘sadbhavna’ fast in Ahmedabad. He said his outfit might have committed a mistake, but it was not their culture to harass or mistreat the poor.

“We (Thakors) may have committed a mistake. We are unhappy, but it is not our culture to harass or mistreat poor. We have been portrayed as looters. We have never done it. Then, why are we being defamed so much?” Thakor said while addressing supporters in Ranip area of Ahmedabad.

Senior Congress leaders, including state party chief Amit Chavda, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Paresh Dhanani, were present among others .

“We were demanding justice for a 14-month-old… She was raped. But we have been labelled as ‘prantvadi’ (regionalist)… We are Gujarati and it is our culture to sacrifice ourselves for the pride of Gujarat,” said Thakor, who broke his fast by drinking lemonade from the hands of five children of migrant families.

Former state Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia hit out at the ruling BJP “for having anti-migrant mentality”.
