(File Photo)Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said on Saturday that the gross enrolment ratio of girl students in higher education increased in Tripura after their college fees were first waived in 2022. He attributed the state’s growth in education to the ambitious National Education Policy (NEP).
“This academic year (2024-25), 37,450 girl students enrolled in general degree colleges, compared to 35,800 boy students. In the previous academic year (2023-24), more girl students (35,650) enrolled in degree colleges than their male counterparts (35,800),” the chief minister said.
Saha, who is also in charge of the education portfolio, said this during his speech at the platinum jubilee programme at Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailashahar of the Unakoti district.
Dr Saha said the state government had taken several initiatives in line with the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, including 33 per cent reservation for women in government jobs, the establishment of pink toilets, and 50 per cent reservation for women in government stalls.
Saha assured the ‘maharajas’ of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram that no one would encroach on their land in the future. “Education and healthcare are our top priorities. We will not compromise on these. We are committed to the development of our state. We do not just speak; we act,” said Saha. He also said the next generation would greatly benefit from the NEP implemented in all state-run colleges and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the policy.
The state has also introduced the ‘Lakshya’ scheme to prepare aspirants for competitive examinations. Additionally, he said it would open Dhamma Dipa University at Sabroom, while Techno India University and Aryavart International University are in progress.
“We aimed to transform Tripura into an educational hub in the northeastern region. We have dental and nursing colleges now. We met many challenges, but we have succeeded,” he said.
