Following a meeting with officials, Banerjee announced new curbs from Thursday to contain the spread of Covid-19, including the suspension of local train services and a reduction in working hours of banks.
The CM wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to provide everyone free vaccines. She also urged him to ensure an adequate supply of essential drugs and medical oxygen to West Bengal.
At a press conference where the new restrictions were announced, Banerjee told reporters that Metro rail and state transport services would be curtailed by 50 per cent, while people flying to the state or entering through long-distance trains and inter-state buses from May 7 will have to carry negative RT-PCR reports not older than 72 hours.
“We are increasing the number of beds for Covid patients at Kolkata Police Hospital and Sambhu Nath Pandit Hospital,” the Chief Minister told reporters.
