Police in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Friday lodged an FIR against four doctors and a clerk of the Vardhman Institute of Medical Sciences, Pawapuri, for allegedly demanding sexual favours from at least three girl students in exchange for better grades in their viva exams. The Nalanda district administration has set up a committee to probe the matter.

The student who lodged the complaint told police that all students were called to report to the college again after they appeared for their practicals and viva voce exam between 9 am and 2 pm on Wednesday.

“We were told on the phone that we would be failed in the viva test if we do not report. When we reached the college, girls were allowed in one by one, while boys were kept waiting outside the main gate,” the complainant said.

“A head of department asked me that if I was made the topper, what would I give him in return… I was later directed to another room where there were two doctors, and one of them tried to kiss me,” she said in the complaint.

She said at least three more girls had complained of such behaviour from the doctors – allegedly demanding sexual favours in return for giving pass marks or even increasing marks.

Pawapuri police outpost in-charge, Anita Kumari, said: “Some girls complained to us about doctors misbehaving with them during practical and viva test on December 6. We have lodged a case against four doctors and others…”

The case was taken over by the Nalanda womens’ police station on Thursday.

Principal in charge of the medical college, Dr Ashok Kumar, said: “As per the standard provisions, the Nalanda DM has set up a committee to thoroughly probe the matter. The committee will talk to the girl students and the doctors.”

A senior police officer said arrests in such cases would be made only after a thorough probe.
