Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday spoke to the parents of 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, an Ernst & Young employee who allegedly died due to “work pressure”, and assured them that he would “personally fight for this cause” as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Gandhi also instructed the All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC) to come up with draft guidelines for better working conditions for professionals in the corporate sector.
“AIPC will announce a helpline soon to collect information from corporate professionals about issues related to work stress and toxic work culture,” an AIPC statement said on Saturday.
Gandhi offered his sympathies at Perayil’s sudden demise and “lauded the family’s courage and selflessness to speak up at this extremely difficult moment about this issue in the larger interest of improving working conditions for the millions of professionals in India”.
Gandhi also instructed the AIPC chairman to create an awareness movement in Perayil’s memory for all working professionals in India.
Perayil’s mother had alleged in a letter to EY India head Rajiv Memani that her daughter died due to “work pressure” at the firm. “On July 20, Anna returned home from the office late in the evening and suddenly collapsed. She was taken to the hospital where the doctors declared her dead… Before that she had no health issues,” the family had told The Indian Express.
Following Perayil’s death, the Centre had on Thursday launched a probe into allegations of an “unsafe and exploitative work environment” at Ernst & Young.
The firm has denied the allegations and promised to continue to take steps to make its work environment healthier.
