Starlink would help the least served in rural India, says SpaceX founder Elon Musk

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has pitched Starlink’s satellite internet service as a way to improve connectivity in underserved parts of India, particularly rural areas.

“Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas,” Musk said in a post on social media on Wednesday, responding to a post by X account DogeDesigner that advocated bringing Starlink services to remote Indian villages.

The post Musk responded to highlighted the continuing connectivity gap between rural and urban India. According to the figures cited in the post, 11,256 listed villages had no 4G coverage as of May 2026. India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions in March 2026, including 440.87 million in rural areas. Rural subscription density stood at 48.31 per 100 people, compared with 126.80 in urban India.

Starlink renews push to enter India

The company has reportedly submitted a fresh application to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) for approval of its Gen 2 satellite constellation, according to a report from the Economic Times.

The Gen 2 system includes newer capabilities such as direct-to-device connectivity. However, Starlink’s India plans have previously faced security-related hurdles, with the Ministry of Home Affairs freezing approval for the service in June amid security concerns.

Starlink operates a network of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, which orbit at around 36,000 km above Earth, Starlink satellites operate much closer to the planet, at roughly 550 km. This helps reduce latency and allows the service to provide internet connectivity without relying on conventional cellular towers.

How Starlink help rural India?

Starlink could be particularly useful in remote areas where building fibre networks or deploying large numbers of mobile towers is difficult or expensive. The service requires a customer terminal rather than extensive ground infrastructure, potentially allowing it to reach communities that remain poorly connected.

However, Starlink is not designed to replace conventional mobile networks entirely. Its capacity is better suited to areas with relatively low population density. Musk has previously said the service may be able to serve only a small share of users in densely populated urban areas, where conventional cellular networks can accommodate far more people.

Starlink has yet to launch commercial services in India

Starlink’s commercial rollout still requires it to meet applicable security conditions and obtain the necessary spectrum assignment and other regulatory clearances. Other non-geostationary satellite operators have similarly yet to begin commercial services in the country.

TRAI has issued recommendations on the assignment and pricing of satellite spectrum, with subsequent recommendations and responses still under consideration by the Department of Telecommunications.

Telecom operators have also raised concerns about competition from satellite internet providers.
