Principal of a girls college and her driver were seriously injured in a gun attack in Kalyanpur area of Kanpur on Thursday morning. The driver died during treatment while the principal is in hospital.
An old rivalry is said to be the reason behind the attack, said Kanpur DIG Amitabh Yash. The principal initially told the police that two motorcycle-borne youths had fired at them, but later said there were about 12 persons who fired at her vehicle.
Circle Officer of Kalyanpur Sanjay Kumar Yadav said the incident took place in the morning when Saroj Kumari Shukla, principal,Gandhi Balika Intermediate College in Jhinjhak area of Ramabai Nagar district, was on her way to the college in her car driven by Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The principal told the police that she left her Sharda Nagar residence and had reached the Jhinjhak Road when two youths riding a motorcycle fired indiscriminately. A bullet hit the driver in the chest while the principal got a bullet in her shoulder.
The CO said the locals rushed the injured to Regency Hospital where Rajesh died after two hours. The police, however, are yet to find a witness. The principal lodged a complaint alleging that Rajendra Dikshit of Mangalpur locality in Ramabai Nagar and his associates had attacked her.
Yadav said both Shukla and Dikshit run an intermediate and a degree college each in Ramabai Nagar. Both families had an enmity since they applied for a petrol pump in Jhinjhak last year but it was allotted to a third person,Sheelu Singh Gaur.
