The IIT Bombay faculty forum, which met on Wednesday to see if a compromise formula can be worked out, decided they are ready to implement the new Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) from 2013,provided that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) agrees to their other conditions.

The suggestions of the IIT Bombay senate, which had been disregarded by the Ministry, included implementing the new test from 2014 and not next year, making JEE-Advanced a subjective-type paper and not giving weightage to the Std XII board exams.

“Our senate had resolved that the new pattern should be introduced from 2014. However,it was decided on Wednesday that we can support the introduction of the new exam format from 2013,provided that the first test (JEE-Main),to be used for filtering students, will not give any weightage to board marks. It was agreed that the board performance will be used as cut-off only,as per the existing practice. It was also decided that the second test for selected students will be conducted exclusively by the IITs. According to the Ministry, the second test will be held on the same day as the main exam and the scores can be used by all engineering institutes. This is not acceptable to us,” said a faculty member.

Faculty members decided that the IITs “own JEE” (second test) will be held on a separate date from main exam, possibly by the end of May after the results of the first test are available.

However, faculty members of IIT Bombay said the institute’s final stand will be clear only after the senate meets. “The final decision on accepting or rejecting the new test can be taken only by the institute’s senate, which may meet by June-end or in July. After the All India IIT Faculty Federation met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently,he assured us that he would look into the matter. However, till date there has been no communication from MHRD,” said a faculty member.

After the IIT Council meeting, the Ministry had announced that the new system will be in place from 2013 and Std XII boards marks normalised on percentile basis, plus the marks obtained in the JEE-main exam with equal weightage, will be used for screening students for the second test.
