The Gujarat Technological University(GTU),which introduced PhD programmes a year ago and registered 190 research candidates in 2011,has engaged as many as 72 professors as guides from foreign universities. This is besides 40 experts from various engineering institutes in the state and outside in the country.

The foreign experts are from the University of Alberta in Canada,University of Oklahoma and the University of Kansas in the US and University of Maribor in Slovenia. They are guiding the research in different disciplines, including engineering, pharmacy and managements.

As it is costlier to invite these guides to Gujarat regularly for face-to-face interactions with students,GTU has made arrangements of online interaction and video conferencing for them.

Vice-Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal told The Indian Express he was hopeful that the interactions would enable the students to bring their research work to international standard, which would ultimately benefit the nation.

Another advantage of engaging foreign experts is that research students could avail of foreign expertise without going abroad and at no cost as the foreign experts are not charging any fee. Many students who go abroad for research work,he said, had to spend a huge amount and many times take up some job to fund their research work.

To promote research,GTU has been sanctioned Rs 80 crore by the state government to set up advanced laboratories with the latest equipments required for research in various disciplines. Aggarwal said GTU has also tied up with all the research laboratories in the country for a better exposure to its students.

Of the 190 PhD students,70 are enrolled for research in computer sciences and other engineering subjects,65 for pharmacy courses and 55 in management courses.

April 23 last date for filing admission form

The last date for filing the online application for admission to PhD programme is April 23. Aggarwal said the students also needed to submit a copy of the online application in physical form personally at GTU on or before April 23. The entrance test will be held on April 29.
